Yugoslavia

The dinar (Cyrillic script: динар) was the currency of the three Yugoslav states: the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (formerly the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes), the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia between 1918 and 2003.

Following WWI a new country, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was founded, partly on the remains of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The new official currency of the state was based on the dinar of the Kingdom of Serbia, and the first coins and banknotes were introduced in 1920. Later in 1929 the country officially changed its name to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The new Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia was formed in 1946 with the Federation Yugoslavian dinar as its currency. In 1963, the state was renamed the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

In 1994 a new currency of FR Yugoslavia (established in 1992 after the break up of SFRY) was introduced, the Novi Dinar.
