Principality of Serbia

After the surrender of towns by the Turks in 1867, Prince Mihailo, during his second reign (1860-1868), undertook all legal actions for the introduction and minting of the first Serbian money.

The first series of coins was made in the Imperial andRoyal Mint in Vienna, in denominations of 1, 5 and 10 para. Money came from Vienna to Belgrade in February 1869, so Prince Mihailo did not see since he was assassinated in Kosutnjak in 1868. The coins were created by the then famous engravers Anton Scharf and Friedrich Lajsek.

The modern Serbian dinar ("Milan d'argent") was first minted in 1875. It was, in terms of technical characteristics, and by value, equal to the French franc. This Serbian dinar, which appeared 400 years after the last Serbian medieval Serbian denomination was forged, was released into circulation in exchange for other silver. Since the people did not have silver for replacement, the originally planned emission was not realized. In addition, most of the coins were melted even before it was withdrawn from circulation, leaving only a small number of copies available for collectors.
